Effective 1/1/2016, the District of Columbia Employer Transit Benefit Ordinance will require employers with 20+ employees working in the District of Columbia to offer one of the following pre-tax transit benefits:
- An employee-paid pre-tax transit benefit;
- An employer-paid program whereby the employer provides a transit pass or reimbursement for vanpool of bicycling costs; or
- Employer provided transportation at no cost to the covered employee in a vanpool or bus operated by and for the employer.
Employers should first determine whether the organization is subject to the District of Columbia Employer Transit Benefits Ordinance. If the law applies to your organization, review your current commuter benefits offering and ensure that you are ready to comply with the new law by 1/1/2016.
